But the truth is, there’s no reason to be ashamed about how you injured your smile! As the four following stories prove, it can always be worse!

The Wrong Tools for The Job

When most people hit the home improvement store to buy a new drill, they’re usually looking for something to put holes in wood or drywall, and by and large, that’s what they’ll find. However, in a case of DIY gone wrong, one man decided to use his regular, household drill to remove a cavity in his tooth! Unsurprisingly, this was met with disastrous results when the bit became stuck in the tooth, requiring an urgent visit to the emergency dentist. Now, imagine how much happier he would have been if he’d just gone there to begin with!

Let it Be

People can sometimes do some questionable things in an effort to save money. In one such case, a woman lost her dental crown and placed it on the counter for safekeeping until her upcoming emergency dental appointment. Unfortunately, her dog still somehow found it and swallowed it whole. However, instead of making peace with needing a new restoration, she waited for the dog to pass the crown, cleaned it up, and brought it back to her dentist to be reattached. Then, once it was placed, she shared its harrowing journey with her dental team, who absolutely would not have reused the crown had they realized where it had been.

While it’s admirable to try and save a buck or two where you can, some things just aren’t worth the risk. In addition to being extremely gross, reusing a crown that has literally been through a dog’s digestive system could leave you vulnerable to all sorts of dangerous illnesses!

Tomato, Tomato

No matter how you say it (does anybody actually pronounce it “to-MAH-to?”), tomatoes are one of the most versatile veggies (or fruits, depending on who you’re asking). They make a mean marinara, can garnish a sandwich with aplomb, and are divine with sliced mozzarella and balsamic dressing. In this case of weird dental emergencies, a man who had at some point eaten a tomato began experiencing what he thought was a painful periodontal infection. However, after sitting down in the dental chair, his dentist discovered that his gums weren’t the “root” of the problem after all. You see, a tomato seed had become lodged below the gumline and had begun sprouting an actual plant in his periodontal tissue! The good news is that his gums were fine, however nobody knows the fate of the tomato plant…

A Sticky Situation

When your dentist attaches a dental crown to your reshaped tooth, they use a strong bonding material that can last for years. Unfortunately, however, sometimes it can come loose due to your diet, its age, or other factors. If this happens, you can sometimes temporarily keep it in place with dental cement available online and in some pharmacies. Unfortunately, in this tale, a woman lost her crown but didn’t get the memo about how to safely reattach it. She decided that rather than calling her dentist for assistance, she’d simply do it herself with a bottle of household superglue. This is dangerous in and of itself because these products are not safe for consumption, let alone to be residing permanently in your mouth. However, this story gets worse, because not only did she put the glue on the wrong tooth, but she also got it all over her mouth and even down her throat, which again underscores the importance of calling your dentist ASAP when experiencing a dental emergency, instead of trying to jerry-rig a restoration using poisonous chemicals designed for household repairs!

Remember, it’s totally normal to feel a little embarrassed about some kinds of dental emergencies, but you can rest assured that there’s nothing to be ashamed of. The most important thing is to get the help you need as soon as possible so you can restore your beautiful, pain-free smile without any unnecessary drama!

About Dr. Hubler

Dr. Parley Hubler earned his undergraduate degree at Brigham Young University and his dental degree at the Oklahoma College of Dentistry.
